When there are fires in California, the smoke sett

When there are fires in California, the smoke settles into our Las Vegas valley. Our house is up pretty high on one of the sides of the valley, so generally we can see all the way across the expanse to the mountains on the other side, right from our backyard.

Not this week.
.
This week, we can barely even see the mountains behind us - the mountains our house is built on. The ones 200 feet from my front door.
.
The smoke is heavy, and we see it everywhere. It feels tangible, a weight closing down on us.
.
And it's dark. When the smoke is thick, the light struggles to get through.
.
This is how I feel about our world right now.
.
The air feels suffocating, the darkness tangible, moreso than I've ever known, ever been aware of. Evil no longer feels far away, but right outside my front door.
.
I looked out my window this morning, into the darkness, at an hour when it should have already been light, and all I could think was, "Jesus. We need the light to break through."
.
Australia. Afghanistan. California. New York. Where can we look to escape the darkness? We see it. We see it everywhere.
.
Jesus. We need your light to break through.
.
Listen, I know how tempting it is right now to look desperately for something that will pull us out of this mess. Medicine. Government. Social Justice. I understand the desire to find a solution.
.
But these things are only temporary, if they even "work" at all. There is no true solution - no true light - outside of Jesus Christ. When we look for anything else to be our salvation, we stay firmly planted in the darkness.
.
I cannot singlehandedly move the smoke out of our valley. We have to wait for the wind, the rain - actual acts of God that work to move the darkness out so the light can shine through again.
.
So, I keep coming back to this: The most powerful way we have to fight this darkness is to fight on our knees. To stay in the Word. To know the TRUTH. To rest in the One who does truly save.
.
Today, friend, take the darkness to Him. And leave it there. He controls the wind, the rain, and the light itself. He is our only hope.

The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5

The only way to describe my attitude this morning

The only way to describe my attitude this morning was GRUMPY.⁠
.⁠
Everyone was running late.⁠
.⁠
A car cut me off in the Starbucks line (the irony is NOT lost on me).⁠
.⁠
I made a big work mistake yesterday that's still annoying me.⁠
.⁠
And yet if I'm honest, it's not really any of those things.⁠
.⁠
Really, it's the tension of vaccines and mandates and the fact that we are still living in a season I'd hoped would be over by now.⁠
.⁠
Really, it's the men and women still stranded in Afghanistan, and the deep disappointment I feel over the way our leadership has handled this situation.⁠
.⁠
Really, it's the shocking amount of posts on my social media feed in defense of killing babies.⁠
.⁠
Really, it's grief.⁠
.⁠
My insides are ready to explode on the outside, and today I'm just on edge. I actually considered going on a run, just to find a way to physically get the feelings out.⁠
.⁠
Me. On a run. 🤣⁠
.⁠
Instead, I opened my Bible and read about how even in times of battle, those of us who fear the Lord are to praise Him, honor Him, revere Him! (Psalm 22:23) How He isn't far away, but near. How our job is not to rescue ourselves, but to tell the next generation about Him.⁠
.⁠
I had the thought this morning that I don't know that life has ever been harder to navigate. Don't get me wrong, we've been through some impossible seasons, but this one feels so long and unpredictable. Every time you think you're making progress in some way, something else pops up and the grief spirals all over again.⁠
.⁠
And yet, He remains sovereign. Trustworthy. Faithful. Worthy of praise.⁠
.⁠
I still feel grumpy. But I'm writing this to remind myself first and you second that even in our grief turned grumpiness, WE ARE NOT WITHOUT HOPE.⁠
.⁠
We just make sure we're putting our hope in the right place.⁠
.⁠
Not in the state of our country, or our world, but in the One who holds all things together.⁠
.⁠
Not in the news, but in His Word.⁠
.⁠
Not in the stories of distress and wickedness, but in telling our own children our own true stories of His faithfulness.⁠
.⁠
We are not without hope. Lord Jesus, let your unwavering hope overwhelm our grief. 💛⁠

She started digging up and eating all our newly-la

She started digging up and eating all our newly-landscaped plants, so we put a fence around them.⁠
⁠
We got a garden box, raised off the ground so she couldn't dig up those plants too.⁠
⁠
I walked outside one morning and she'd actually climbed up INTO the garden bed, and buried her nose completely in it.⁠
⁠
Plants were gone, of course. 🤣⁠
⁠
I had to hold her still and gently spray her with the hose to get her face clean.⁠
⁠
But not before taking a picture, because look at that face, all covered in dirt.⁠
⁠
I thought later about the whole situation, about how we've blocked off our plants with a fence just so Penny doesn't destroy them, and how this new garden box was, yet again, an attempt to keep the plants away from the plant-eating puppy.⁠
⁠
It occurred to me that really, the thing we need to do is to stop buying plants.⁠
⁠
Don't we do the same thing with our own temptations, though? We build fences and boxes to keep ourselves in check, all while continuing to keep our temptations close to us. It doesn't occur to us to get rid of them all together, to create a permanent boundary.⁠
⁠
But sometimes, that's exactly what we need to do.⁠
⁠
Penny's got me thinking this morning, about what I need to just plain get rid of. What's standing in the way of the kind of person I want to be? Of the kind of habits I want to develop? What's consuming my attention right now, in an unhealthy way? What am I treating as an idol instead of pursuing our holy God?⁠

May we all be willing to examine our lives + where our temptations + distractions lie. And then quit buying (into) them. 💛

I love that she uses the word "imagine" here. Because the things we imagine are very different from the truth. Everything does not depend on us. So our fear may very well be completely unfounded.⁠

This convicts my fear-heavy soul, all the while encouraging my hopeful heart. Our GOD is the One on whom everything depends. And He is more than able to handle every single thing that comes His way.⁠

So I can rest, without fear.⁠
⁠

How is it already back-to-school season? I am baff

How is it already back-to-school season? I am baffled, and also a little relieved, let's be honest. A return to structure and schedules and routines - YAY!!⁠

And let me tell you, nothing needs a return to routine like my meal planning. How about you? I'm taking this week to dive back into getting this a little more under control with my handy dandy meal planner (link in bio if you need one too!).⁠

Here's how I meal plan each week right now:⁠
⁠
1. Assess what we've got in our fridge, freezer and pantry. Make a list!⁠
⁠
2. Look at the list AS A WHOLE and see what we can combine to make dinners this week. Got noodles in the pantry and frozen marinara sauce in the freezer? Spaghetti night it is!⁠
⁠
3. See how many nights I can fill with meals from the fridge/freezer/pantry, and then fill in the other nights with simple favorites. Grilled cheese + tomato soup. Pizza. Burgers. You get the idea.⁠
⁠
4. Choose ONE thing for my own lunch each week, something that will last, like a couscous salad or a sausage bake. Prep it on Sunday and eat it all week long, or until I get bored of it.⁠

5. Decide on ONE things for breakfasts this week, and make sure we have it on hand. (Cereal, oatmeal, waffles, etc.)⁠

6. Have my kids pack their lunches, because we are GOING BACK TO SCHOOL, my friends!⁠
